Roll Monitoring Remotely with an Ultrasonic

To monitor the size of a large roll of paper from a distance of up to 8 meters

As a large roll of paper pays out during a printing process, the roll diameter is monitored to prevent paper from running out during the print run. The roll is mounted at an inconvenient location, near the ceiling.

A U-GAGE QT50U sensor is mounted perpendicular to the roll, at a distance of up to 8 meters from the empty roll. Because the sensor can be taught remotely, it also may be located near the ceiling.

The analog output U-GAGE QT50U continuously tracks roll size. It is taught the distance to the full roll and to the empty roll. As the paper is used, the sensor sends an ongoing analog signal that is scaled to represent the shrinking size of the roll.
