Accurate ink level monitoring in printers in imperative to maintain optimal quality. If ink runs out and the printer keeps running, the end product will need to be thrown out. This increases costs not only due to the wasted raw materials, but also because of the cost of recycling or disposing of the paper.
Behind each of the four print rollers on a color printing machine is an ink tray. The transducer of the U-GAGE Q45UR ultrasonic sensor is mounted approximately 100-200 mm above the ink in the tray.
As the ink level changes, the analog output of the Q45UR gives a reading to the larger refill tank that contains the ink supply. When the ink drops to the minimum level, the sensor signals the refill tank to add more ink to the tray.
