Metal Wisker Detection on Beverage Cans
To detect metal whiskers on the tops of cans
Description
As two-piece beverage cans are manufactured from tin plate, a machine trims the jagged top edge of the cans. If the trimming machine is worn or set up incorrectly a small metal or whisker remains on the can after trimming. Whiskers are extremely small and can be difficult to see with the human eye.
To detect the whiskers so they don't fall into the can when it is filled, an AC-coupled D12 with plastic optic fibers and L2 lenses inspects the area just above the top of the cans. If a can has a whisker, the whisker breaks the beam of the D12.
