Registration Mark Detection on a Clear Web

To detect of a printed mark on a continuous web of clear or translucent material for accurate control of downstream cutoff

Description

A pair of opposed-mode plastic fibers, terminated on the sensing end in a “U”-shaped assembly, straddles the edge of a clear web. The fiber sensor connects to a D11 Expert sensor that senses the difference between the amount of light transmitted through the web and through a registration mark printed on the edge of t he web.

Further down the line, the registration mark signals a cutter where to cut the web.

The D11 uses a visible green light source, which excels at opposed-mode detection even of lightly printed registration marks. The use of opposed mode fiber optics prevents the sensor from being influenced by the color of the printed mark and to minimize the sensor’s sensitivity to web flutter.
