Banner Engineering Adds Surface Flush Mount Models to Its Line of Emergency Stop (E-Stop) Buttons

Minneapolis, MN (January 8, 2013)—Banner Engineering expands its line of emergency stop buttons with the Surface Flush Mount E-Stop. The new 40-mm emergency stop buttons are designed to easily mount to a wall or other flat surface without disassembling or individual wiring. Available with a non-illuminated base with four actuator styles: standard, illuminated actuator, lockable actuator and an illuminated lockable actuator; or an illuminated base with a standard or a lockable actuator.

To meet diverse application requirements, the illuminated-base Surface Flush Mount E-Stops feature Banner's industry-recognized EZ-LIGHT® logic and are available with two colors (yellow or green and red lighting) or one color (red lighting). Depending on the model, the highly visible LED illuminated-base changes from yellow to flashing red when actuated, immediately alerting operators to an emergency stop condition. The illumination helps operators quickly identify the actuated button(s) and reset them with a pull or twist of the pushed button. Its ease of use and efficient visual indication method reduces down time due to stop conditions.

The lockable style actuator can provide supervisory or personal control. It is intended to prevent unauthorized or accidental resetting by accommodating a padlock to secure the actuated button in place.

To enhance safety across the factory floor, multiple E-stops can be connected via the CSS Series Hookup cordsets for system-wide control. By applying an external signal via the M12 QD connector, the illuminated-base models can change from a steady yellow light to a steady red indicator light when a stop condition exists. Models that interface with Safety BUS nodes/gateways are also available.

The easy-to-use Surface Flush Mount E-Stop buttons have “Safe Break Action” to ensure the safety contacts will open if the contact block is separated from the actuator. The push-to-stop, twist-to-release or pull-to-release actuator and direct (positive) opening operation is compliant with ANSI B11.19, ANSI NFPA79, ISO 13850 and IEC/EN 60204-1 Emergency Stop requirements and meets worldwide safety standards with a red button and yellow background.

30 mm mount E-Stops models are also available; view the 30 mm Mount Illuminated E-Stop demonstration video and learn more about the Surface Flush Mount E-Stop at www.bannerengineering.com.

Banner Engineering Introduces Two Sensors for Hygienic and Washdown Environments

Minneapolis, MN (December 11)—Banner Engineering announces the QM26 and the QMH26 photoelectric sensors, designed specifically for food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries. Influenced by the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG) and food safety initiatives among private businesses, Banner wanted to ensure the sensors provided reliable performance in manufacturing and packaging zones, including contact zones, splash zones and non-contact zones.

“The sensors' design considers Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles for hygienic manufacturing processes,” said Mark Schmid, Banner Engineering Food and Beverage Industry Manager. “Our goal was to deliver Banner's proven sensing capabilities to areas where the sensors may come in contact with food or materials, and make them suitable for harsh washdown environments with high pressure, extreme temperatures and chemicals.”

The QM26 is housed in a non-toxic 316L stainless steel housing, and can survive high pressure washdowns and temperature cycling, ranging from -30° C to 60° C. The sensor is ECOLAB® certified for inexhaustible sensor life in chemically cleaned environments and is intended for splash zone areas. The QM26 also features easy side-mounting for quick set-up and installation.

The QMH26 has all the advantages of the QM26, however, it is designed with minimal grooves and crevices, leaving no room for bacteria to hide and multiply. It is self-draining for clean-in-place (CIP) applications. The sensor's hygienic mounting shape reduces contamination risk, making it a suitable sensor to place in contact zones.

“As US food and drug manufacturing companies engage more with hygienic food safety controls, they'll be able to rely on Banner—and our extensive system of distributors and local support—to quickly and efficiently supply them with hygienic, washdown sensors,” said Steve Wong, Pharmaceutical Industry Manager.

New DF-G1 Fiber Amplifier Features Intuitive Interface, High-Performance Design

MINNEAPOLIS — February 21, 2012 — A focus on easy set-up and configuration, stable sensing performance, and competitive pricing all guided the development of the new DF-G1 Expert™ Dual Display Fiber Amplifier from Banner Engineering Corp. The DF-G1 series features two bright digital readouts, a thermally stable and high performance electronic design, an improved fiber clamp, and a new, more intuitive user interface. This dual display fiber amplifier expands the range of applications and customers Banner can serve with plastic and glass fiber optic assemblies. Such applications include small part or wire break detection on electronics assembly machines, pill and caplet counting, and high-speed detection for registration mark or product leading edge detection, to name a few.

"What we've done with the DF-G1, is bring all of Banner's application knowledge and advanced sensing algorithms to the customer with the benefit of a dual digital display for ease-of-use and application monitoring," said Dennis Smith, Technical Marketing Manager at Banner Engineering. "The two displays and the rocker button are an intuitive user interface that simplifies sensor set-up, and provides the current light level and threshold values at a glance. And with Banner's extensive experience developing custom fiber assemblies, we can support OEM machine builders around the world with custom fiber solutions and custom amplifier configurations."

The DF-G1 is powered by a high performance 32-bit microprocessor with a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter. The user has full control over all operating parameters, including switch point threshold, Light Operate or Dark Operate, various output timing functions, electronic gain level, and sensor response speed. The operator can use full manual control or one of six Expert TEACH and SET methods to ensure optimal gain and threshold selection for all applications, especially low contrast applications, such small part or clear object detection. Response speeds of 200 µs (High Speed), 500 µs (Standard Speed), 2 ms (Long Range), and 5 ms (Extra Long Range) allow the operator to optimize the DF-G1 for fast low contrast applications or to maximum the sensing range for long distance applications, such as part in place verification.

Another key benefit of the new DF-G1 is the thermally stable electronics which minimize warm-up drift, and allow many amplifiers to be mounted size-by-side with no reduction in the ambient temperature limit. Thermal stability pays dividends in both reduced machine start-up time, and it eliminates production delays due to ambient temperature changes which may affect some sensors. Furthermore, a robust cross talk avoidance algorithm allows two fiber optic assemblies to be mounted in close proximity sensing different features of the same target for many applications.

Banner Engineering offers a broad array of robust SteelSkin™, high flex plastic and glass fiber optic assemblies for mechanically challenging or high temperature installations. The sleek 10 mm wide housing mounts to 35 mm DIN rail maximizing the number of sensing points available in the cabinet. The bright dual displays of DF-G1 are easy to read showing both the light signal level and threshold simultaneously. An ECO (economy) display mode reduces amplifier power consumption by 25%. The highly visible red LED sensing beam makes for easy alignment to the target, and the lever action fiber clamp provides stable, reliable, and trouble free fiber clamping.

Banner Introduces Several Enhancements to WLS28 Work Light Strip

MINNEAPOLIS — January 17, 2012 — When Banner Engineering Corp. first developed the WLS28 Work Light Strip, the goal was make a task light that provided even, bright, highly efficient white LED illumination to enclosures and other areas with poor lighting conditions. Having supremely achieved that goal, the WLS28 has since evolved and now offers a number of significant enhancements and purchase options, making it a dynamic part of Banner's line of lighting and indicators.

Banner's new WLS28 models are now available in the following:
* Six different colors (cool and warm white, red, green, blue, and yellow)
* Standard or push button on/off
* Sealed IP67/IP69K or unsealed IP50
* Cascadable or non-cascadable
* Clear or diffused plastic windows

"We're excited about the growth we've seen in the task lighting area, and the WLS28 has been a big part of that since its initial release," said Chuck Dolezalek, Director of Product Development for Lighting and Indicator products. "We've taken some big steps toward realizing the potential of the WLS28 with the new models we've added. New models have meant new applications for our customers and also new business markets for us."

The core qualities that have made the WLS28 a versatile lighting solution remain the same — each light features a robust, yet small profile metal housing and is available in various lengths from 145mm (5.7 in.) to 1130mm (44.5 in.), while maintaining the same narrow width of 28mm (1.1 in.) for all models. Extremely bright LEDs emit an even pattern of light, casting no shadows. The WLS28 also boasts cost and time saving attributes in the form of energy efficiency and installation simplicity. By consuming less than 9 watts per foot, the WLS28 is remarkably frugal for a light that is designed to last more than 50,000 hours of continuous operation with minimal loss of intensity. Cascading the lights end-to-end potentially cuts costs even more by reducing the amount of wiring and installation time needed.

Zinc-plated 14-gage steel swivel mounting brackets that allow 45° pivoting in either direction are included, but the WLS28 has several mounting options and bracket styles. Another mounting option includes the use of high strength magnets, which eliminates the need to drill holes and allows the light to be repositioned. The WLS28 operates on 12 to 30V dc power and is available in cabled or quick disconnect models.

MINNEAPOLIS — December 6, 2011 — With safety at the forefront of countless industrial initiatives, Banner Engineering Corp. introduces the EZ-SCREEN Low-Profile Safety Light Curtain with Integral Muting, a control reliable, Type 4 Category 4 PLe machine safety product. Low-profile safety light curtains have long been a staple of Banner's machine safety product offerings and are designed for use on smaller production machines, yet are robust enough for large power presses. The rollout of the new integral muting models extends the existing EZ-SCREEN family to provide additional hookup options and functionality — all at a lower cost.

"Space definitely comes at a premium in today's industrial environment, not to mention the resources for safeguarding," said Mike Carlson, Technical Manager for Banner's Safety Products. "Fortunately, the EZ-SCREEN LPM with integral muting provides an excellent solution in both instances. Not only do the variety of sizes, end-to-end sensing, and compact design allow for installation within the machine frame to eliminate any 'holes' or dead zones in the sensing field, but there is also less power consumption and fewer components to stock than traditional safety light curtains."

Safety light curtains protect personnel from injury and machines from damage by guarding points of operation, access, areas and perimeters. The two-piece optoelectronic safeguarding device creates a screen of synchronized, modulated infrared sensing beams that extend from end-to-end of the housing. Featuring a built-in muting function, the new EZ-SCREEN safety light curtains do not require a third box, which helps facilitate set up, reduces the amount of wiring, and cuts down on installation costs. Furthermore, they are highly immune to EMI, RFI, ambient light, weld flash and strobe lights, and come with factory burned-in emitter and receiver circuitry for toughness, dependability, and vibration tolerance.

The EZ-SCREEN LPM with integral muting has a sensing range that spans from 100 mm to 7 m (4" to 23'). Seven different, predefined muting configuration options are available, including Bypass, Mute-Dependent Override, Mute Enable, and Mute-cycle time extensions for "L"-style cell exit applications making the EZ-SCREEN LPM with integral muting incredibly versatile. Set up can be performed without a PC, hand-held programmer, or other device; and DIP switch configuration features many of the same functions as a standard EZ-SCREEN Low-Profile.

Capable of two or four mute device/sensor hookup options, including cost effective two sensor "X-pattern" solution used for material entry and exit applications, and "L" sensor solution that minimizes the " floor space in manufacturing cell exit applications. The optional CSM Muting Splitter Cordset provides easy set up, less wiring, lower installation costs by providing a complete QD connectorized solution.

Additionally, a selectable monitored or non-monitored Mute Lamp, Reset Status, and two OSSD Status Outputs can be relayed to Banner EZ-LIGHTs (or other indicating devices) with a removable disconnect (RD) cordset and accessory end-cap mounting bracket. Easy to see on-board Status, Reset, Zone, Mute Device and Diagnostic indicators and displays tell the number and location of beams blocked and provide detailed diagnostics minimizing downtime and troubleshooting. A selectable emitter test option is able to simulate a "blocked" condition as well.

New SureCross MultiHop Radios with I/O Form Self-Healing, Auto-Routing Radio Networks

MINNEAPOLIS — August 23, 2011 — Banner Engineering Corp. introduces new SureCross™ MultiHop radios with I/O to its comprehensive line of industrial wireless products. Banner's SureCross MultiHop radios easily connect to existing plant-wide control systems to communicate with input and output devices. The MultiHop radios are an ideal solution for remote applications such as lift station control, large-scale irrigation automation, detention pond management and other areas where line of sight is not possible due to difficult terrain.

"MultiHop Radios with I/O were designed to easily extend the range of an existing wired network and to expand the reach of process control without the need for lengthy cable runs," said Chris Dales, Wireless Sales Manager at Banner Engineering. "It is also important to note that our MultiHop radios are not limited to areas where only wired power is available. Even with alternative power sources, the radios still maintain all the wireless communication reliability inherent to the SureCross family."

Banner's SureCross MultiHop wireless sensor networks typically consist of one master radio, but may include many repeater and slave radios. The operational modes are selected by the customer via integrated DIP switches simplifying the specification process. MultiHop radios automatically form self-healing, auto-routing radio networks with multiple hops to extend the range of a Modbus or other serial communication network. In the event a communication pathway becomes unavailable, the radios will find a route back to the network master without intervention from operators. Additional, integrated network addressing reduces interference from collocated networks, and the built-in site survey capability enables rapid assessment of a location's transmission properties.

SureCross MultiHop radios transmit at 1 Watt with license-free operation in the Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band — no monthly data plan or annual fees are required. With a high-gain antenna, range of over 6 miles per hop can be achieved making the network reach virtually limitless. All I/O communication is performed on a Modbus platform and can be easily integrated with existing PLCs, HMIs or other plant-wide system. MultiHop radios are available in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth are available to meet worldwide radio compliance restrictions.

K30 Pick-To-Light Aids in Error-Proofing and Lean Manufacturing

MINNEAPOLIS — March 8, 2011 — Compact, rugged, and cost-effective — these are just some of the words that help describe the new K30 Pick-To-Light from Banner Engineering Corp. The K30 is a miniaturized indicator light with push-button functionality that is part of Banner's actuator family, and is designed to be used in many part assembly, part verification, and bin picking applications. Compact in size and rugged in design, the K30 can easily be installed in smaller bin sizes where space often comes at a premium and in washdown environments thanks to its waterproof IP65 construction.

"Our goal was to develop a smaller pick-to-light to compliment our K50 and K80 actuators while maintaining competitive pricing," said Chuck Dolezalek, Product Development Manager at Banner Engineering. "All of our pick-to-lights provide solutions for error-proofing and lean manufacturing, but because of the smaller size of the K30, our pick-to-lights can now be in a greater number of environments and applications, especially those where available space for such an indicator light is an issue."

The K30's highly visible illuminated dome provides an easy-to-see green job light. Some models have a dual color option with red light functionality, which is used for verification that the part-picking action was sensed. The job light system results in increased efficiency, increased quality control, and reduced rework and inspections. Pick-to-lights help speed up the resumption of work after breaks and other distractions, and are ideal for multilingual workplaces where communication is an issue. No controller is needed, as the K30 is completely self-contained, and it is immune to EMI and RFI interference. Cabled and Quick Disconnect models are available.

Updated Software/Firmware for SC22-3/-3E Offers Enhanced Functionality for Safety Controller

MINNEAPOLIS — February 22, 2011 — Banner Engineering Corp. introduces a software/firmware upgrade for the SC22-3 and SC22-3E safety controller. Version 3.0 is the result of customer and sales feedback for enhanced functionality to the controller. The SC22-3/-3E is a totally configurable safety module that monitors numerous safety devices such as E-stop buttons, interlocking switches, safety light screens, two-hand controls and rope pull switches. There are several additions and changes to the popular safety controller software/firmware, including:

* Adjustable Valve (Device) Monitoring (adjustable from 100 ms to 5 sec.)
* Two methods to Cancel OFF-Delay
* "Cancel OFF-Delay", "Bypass", and "Track Input Fault" Status outputs
* "Notes" document tab that allows the user to document information, such as machine ID and location, record changes to the configuration, etc.
* ON/OFF input now has the option to control just a Status Output
* Additional functionality in Muting and Bypassing options.

"The SC22-3 and 3E have been good products for us since we first introduced them because of their versatility and cost-effectiveness. We've been listening to our customers and our sales force, and thanks to their feedback, we've developed and implemented changes to the software and firmware resulting in an even better safety controller," said Mike Carlson, Safety Products Marketing Manager at Banner Engineering. "Adjustable Valve Monitoring, which helps detect devices that have become slow, inconsistent, or fail while energized, as well as the Cancel Off-Delay, which allows an OFF-delay to be canceled in two different ways, are the biggest enhancements we've made."

Both the muting and bypass functions have added/changed functionality as well. Directional (One-way) Muting has been added with the ability to choose which mute sensor pair can begin the mute cycle; "Protective Stop" inputs are now allowed to be muted; and the Mute Sensor Debounce Time can now be adjusted to delay the beginning and/or the ending of a mute cycle up to 1.5 seconds, which can help eliminate nuisance stops by allowing additional time for the Safety Input device to re-energize its outputs. Meanwhile, Mute Dependent Override can now be deselected, which allows a standard bypass function of a mutable Safety Input device. Conversely, a Safety Input device returning to the RUN state no longer ends the bypassed condition when using the Mute Dependent Override. Furthermore, activation of a Two Hand Control while the module is bypassed will cause a lockout, while the maximum bypass time has been increased to 12 hours.

iVu Plus Family Adds New Features to Include Ethernet Connectivity, Multiple Inspection Storage, and Sort Function

MINNEAPOLIS — February 8, 2010 — Using machine vision sensors for purposes of industrial automation is much like making a movie — complete with lights, camera, and action. But in order to have outstanding production values, satisfy the audience, or customer, and stay within the budget, the right vision sensor with an exceptional eye for detail is also necessary. That's where the new iVu Plus TG and iVu Plus BCR (Bar Code Reader) from Banner Engineering Corp. enter the scene. The iVu Plus family — which includes the integrated touch-screen TG and BCR models, as well as remote versions of both — is designed to be an affordable, flexible, and user friendly solution for any number of industries and applications.

While the technology behind Banner's new vision sensors has become increasingly complex to deliver ROBUST functionality and flexibility, the iVu Plus family remains easy to use with its touch-screen, menu-driven tools. Dynamic new features including Ethernet connectivity, multiple inspection storage, and a new Sort sensor (TG only) — all without the need of a PC to configure — make the Plus models an optimal solution for environments requiring connectivity, rapid product changeover, or sorting capabilities.

"We received great feedback from the original iVu because it was really the first sensor of its kind. By combining touch-screen technology with vision technology, we essentially fused consumer technology with industrial technology to create a high performance, intuitive vision sensor," said Dean Tyo, Chief Engineer for Vision, Measurement, and Instrumentation. "We've continued to innovate on our product line and the enhancements now offered by the new iVu Plus versions are in direct response to the needs and desires of our customers. The biggest selling points to the iVu Plus and Plus Remote models are Ethernet connectivity and multiple inspection storage for fast product changeover and, as a fully encapsulated device, the ability to break away from a PC."

Equipped with three discrete communication channels over Ethernet or Serial interfaces and a faster processor, both the iVu Plus TG and iVu Plus BCR models can export data, such as inspection and image results, to HMIs and PCs at a much greater speed. The Command Channel and Data Export channels support remote control and results, while the Image Export channel exports image data. A 2.7" (68.5 mm) LCD Color Integrated Display comes standard with the integrated models, while the Remote versions feature a 3.5" (88.9 mm) display. The Remote models provide a solution for applications where the sensor location makes it difficult to use an integrated display such as inaccessible, wet or dirty environments.

The iVu Plus TG has four different sensor types that includes Area, which ensures that some feature, or features, are present on a part; Blemish, which finds flaws on a part, such as scratches on a disc; Match, which verifies that a pattern, shape or part in any orientation matches a reference pattern; and Sort, the newest sensor type, which recognizes and sorts different patterns such as nuts, bolts, and washers. The sort function allows users to train the sensor to distinguish between as many as 10 patterns. Combined with Ethernet connectivity, the new iVu Plus TG vision sensor allows for the quick introduction of new patterns and rapid product changeover.

Meanwhile, the iVu Plus BCR reads and optionally validates data within DataMatrix (ECC200 barcodes), and several linear barcodes, such as Code 128, CODABAR, and Pharmacode. with the support of Ethernet connectivity, the iVu Plus BCR sensor also has the ability to remotely update the data used for validation from anywhere on the Ethernet network. Plus, both the TG and BCR models are now able to store up to 30 inspections.

Each of the models is housed in an IEC IP67 rated sensor housing, making them rugged and versatile. The camera acquires up to 100 frames per second, and the integrated ring lights are available in red, green, blue, white, and infrared. With USB 2.0 output, users can save and load configuration data, and using the emulator they can perform offline editing, thus potentially increasing productivity and reducing costs.

New Overmolded Flex Relief Plastic Fibers from Banner Offer Greater Resistance to Fiber Damage in High Flex Environments

MINNEAPOLIS — Feb. 1, 2011 — Banner Engineering Corp. introduces Overmolded Flex Relief Plastic Fibers to its line of fiber optic sensors. The new plastic fiber assemblies provide additional resistance to fiber damage or breakage in high flex environments and typically offer a flex life of more than 10,000 cycles. High quality fiber ensures a reliable and stable detection range necessary for applications in environments where the fiber moves relative to the fixed ferrule. These fibers are suitable in any application where plastic fibers are currently used, and they provide additional durability to machine designs. Typical applications include small part detection, wire break detection, registration mark detection, and part-in-place detection in high vibration or confined spaces. The plastic fiber can be routed to the detection zone, and the overmolded flex relief prevents the fiber from being bent too tightly at the sensing tip.

The new overmolded fibers are also more attractive to the end user and are refined for installations where the fiber is visible on the machine. Stainless steel mounting hardware is included, as is a stainless steel threaded ferrule. The PVC flex relief ensures a minimum bend radius at the fiber-to-ferrule transition. The sensing range is the same to the equivalent non-flex relieved fiber assembly. The fibers also have higher tensile pull resistance than the non-overmolded design, which helps reduce accidental damage to the fibers during installation and maintenance.

Sealed LED Backlights from Banner are Brighter and IP67-Rated for Use in Harsh Environments

MINNEAPOLIS — Nov. 16, 2010 — Banner Engineering Corp. introduces IEC IP67-rated LED Sealed Backlights with increased brightness to its selection of high-quality vision lighting. The sealed backlights are designed to work with any machine vision system and are available in four different sizes, ranging from 75 x 150mm to 300 x 150mm. With their smooth, IP67-rated housing, the backlights are easily cleaned and cannot hold harmful contamination, which makes them an ideal solution for harsh environments such as the food and beverage industry where clean, waterproof, and non-corrosive are essential qualities.

"By sealing the LED backlights in a rugged, non-corrosive waterproof housing, we have made them even more versatile because they can be used for applications in environments where they were not a practical solution, previously," said Banner Engineering Product Development Manager, Chuck Dolezalek. "We feel that these new sealed LED backlights are not only competitively priced, but that their features and performance are as good, if not better than other brands out there."

Backlights are made to emit an even pattern of light so that when placed behind the designated target and aimed directly back towards the camera, the resulting silhouette can be inspected for proper size and shape. The new sealed backlights from Banner operate as a solid-state LED matrix that provides extremely bright light with evenly spread intensity from edge to edge, resulting in greater accuracy when precision gauging is necessary. Some common applications where the IP67 sealed LED backlight is used in conjunction with a vision sensor include stamped metal inspection, meat shape profiling, and bottle fill inspection.

The IP67-rated sealed backlights from Banner are available in four visible colors (red, green, blue, and white), plus infrared, and can be operated in either continuous or strobe mode via their sensor software. The backlights are easily mounted either directly from the back or as a surface mount, and two stainless steel brackets are included along with the corresponding hardware.

Banner's R-Gage™ QT50R Radar Sensors Are Industry Pioneering Detection Solutions

MINNEAPOLIS — Oct. 26, 2010 — Among the unique products developed exclusively by Banner Engineering Corp. are the R-GAGE QT50R Adjustable Field and Retroreflective sensors. Originally made for train detection applications, the R-GAGE QT50R sensor has succeeded where photoelectric, ultrasonic, and magnetic sensors have fallen short, primarily because of its use of radar technology to sense objects.

"Magnetic sensors were affected by the electric current of trains, ultrasonic sensors were susceptible to the interference caused by the wind of passing trains blowing away the return signal, and optical sensors became impractical because dirt and dust accumulated and eventually inhibited the sensor's ability to deliver accurate results," said Ashley Wise, Development Engineer at Banner Engineering. "The solutions to those problems were not always practical or cost-effective, so we developed the QT50R Adjustable Field sensor and it has proven to be a successful and efficient solution."

The Adjustable Field radar sensor emits a well-defined beam of high-frequency radio waves from an internal antenna and processes the signal reflected back to the receiving antenna. Other applications for which the QT50RAF radar sensor is ideal include detecting vehicles on roads and near intersections, boat detection for locks and dams, proximity detection for large shipyard cranes and cargo, car counting for parking ramps, gates, and drive-thrus, and subway and light rail logistics.

Recently, the QT50R Retroreflective model was developed and introduced to complement the Adjustable Field model. Like the Adjustable Field model, the Retroreflective model emits a beam of high-frequency radio waves. However, there are several key differences between the two radar sensors — primarily, the Retroreflective model reliably senses stationary targets with poor or no radar reflection thanks to the use of a reference signal, or retro-target. Additionally, the sensor ignores objects in the background beyond the retroreflective target, and the effective sensing beam of the Retroreflective model is much narrower, creating a more focused sensor.

Finally, the Retroreflective model can also sense targets up to the face of the sensor, thus eliminating any sensor dead zone. "We believe the functionality, utility, and price of both radar sensors will set them apart from the competition," said Wise. Some common applications of the Retroreflective model include tollbooths, gate control, parking ramps, train detection and shipyard logistics, and truck trailer detection at loading docks.

Both sensors feature FMCW (true-presence) radar to detect moving and stationary objects and offer simple sensing field configurations. The radar sensors operate within Industrial, Scientific, and Medial (ISM) telecommunication bandwidth with no special license required, and their rugged IP67 housing is built to withstand harsh conditions, making it impervious to environmental elements such as dust, rain, fog, snow, sun, and wind.

The maximum distance an R-GAGE can sense targets will always depend on the size and shape of the target. The standard adjustable field sensor is limited to 15 meters. However, specials can be ordered with ranges out to 40 meters. Specials can also be ordered with advanced capabilities such as two independent sensing zones, narrower beam patterns, analog output, velocity/direction, heartbeat for health monitoring, and higher gain antennas for more sensitive detection.

R-GAGE QT50R output properties and sensing field can be configured with simple DIP switches. Retro-target TEACH-IN is performed via remote TEACH. Both sensors are available in cabled or M12 quick-disconnect models.

SB12 Series Photoelectric Sensors are Competitively Priced Solution for Material Handling, People Detection Applications

MINNEAPOLIS — Oct. 19, 2010 — Banner Engineering Corp. introduces the SB12 and SB12T to its line of miniature photoelectric sensors. The SB12 Series is an opposed mode emitter/receiver pair that is available as a snap-in barrel (SB12) or 12 mm threaded barrel (SB12T). The two sensors have been developed to provide a competitively priced solution for OEM's machine builders and material handling applications, and to compliment the EZ-Beam S12 opposed mode sensors. Applications include people detection at turnstiles, automatic doors openers, escalators, and moving walkways.

The SB12 Series sensors come as a small, flange-mounted tubular pair. A narrow effective beam allows for multiple sensors to operate in close proximity of one another, and LED status indicators display output overload, signal received, and marginal signal. No brackets are required for either model, allowing for easy installation. Sensing range is 1.5 m, and the emitter uses an invisible infrared LED.

The SB12 provides simple to mount snap-barrel housing for applications where the mounting holes are precisely located and formed and is recommended for applications when the sensor can be installed behind a protective window. Meanwhile, the SB12T comes in M12 threaded housing, and the mounting holes can be prefabricated or drilled on site. The threaded barrel sensor offers a more robust mounting solution for applications in areas with vibration, rough handling, or that are prone to vandalism.

Key features of the SB12 sensors include:
* 10 to 30V dc supply voltage with single NPN or PNP output, depending on model
* Light Operate (LO) or Dark Operate (DO), depending on model

WORLD BEAM® QS30 Family Now Includes Foreground and Background Suppression Adjustable Field Sensors

MINNEAPOLIS — Oct. 12, 2010 — Banner Engineering Corp. introduces two mid-range adjustable field sensors to the WORLD BEAM® QS30 family — a foreground suppression and a background suppression model. The QS30AFF400 (foreground suppression) and the QS30AF600 (background suppression) have been designed to expand Banner's growing line of short and long-range adjustable field sensors. The sensors use advanced linear imager technology to provide a sensing solution for industrial applications such as part-in-place detection, feeder bowl control, and package detection on conveyors.

"Our goal in developing the new QS30AF/AFF models is to provide a high performance, adjustable field sensor capable of twice the detection range with less color sensitivity than Banner's previous generation of sensors," said Dennis Smith, Technical Marketing Manager at Banner Engineering. "The use of a 128 pixel camera (linear imager) makes the QS30 resistant to mechanical shock and vibration, and it enables advanced image processing to maximize the range and minimize the effects of target color. The sensor also has excellent cross talk immunity and can reject fluorescent or other spurious light signals so that multiple Banner sensors can be used in close proximity to one another."

The QS30AFF400 offers foreground suppression for reliable detection when a fixed background is present, though the object color or shape may vary. Conversely, the QS30AF600 provides reliable detection of objects when the background condition is not controlled or fixed, thus ignoring objects beyond the sensing field cutoff. The sensing range for all models is adjusted with a screwdriver potentiometer or via the remote teaches wire input and alignment of the sensor is easy thanks to a visible red LED sensing beam. Both sensors are available in three different waterproof, epoxy encapsulated IP67-rated housings allowing them to be used in even the toughest of industrial environments, while a 30 mm threaded barrel or side mount provides a variety of mounting options.

Additional features of the QS30AF/AFF:

Compact Foreground Suppression Sensors Enable Consistent Detection Regardless of Target's Color, Reflectivity or Background

Minneapolis, MN—March 29, 2010—Banner Engineering introduces the WORLD-BEAM® QS18 Adjustable-Field Foreground Suppression Sensors, designed to reliably detect objects regardless of color, reflectivity, surface irregularities or background conditions. The sensor's universal mounting design makes installation quick and easy, while a simple screwdriver adjustment allows for precise setup of sensing range. With a compact and IP67-rated sealed housing, the QS18 adjustable-field sensors deliver an exceptional sensing solution for small or difficult-to-reach areas.

The QS18 Adjustable-Field Foreground Suppression Sensors operate in diffuse mode, detecting light returned by the background, but ignoring light returned by the object. The concept is similar to that of a polarized retroreflective sensor; if the sensor cannot see the background (reflector), the output switches on—indicating that the target object is present.

"These photoelectric sensors are an ideal solution for material handling or packaging applications where irregularly sized/positioned or shiny objects are present against a fixed background," said Mike Turner, Material Handling Business Development Manager at Banner Engineering.

These compact sensors are available in two adjustable cutoff ranges: 15-40 mm and 30-200 mm. The short-range models are ideal for detecting thinner objects that are closer to the background.

The QS18 Foreground Suppression Sensors are particularly useful if the following application conditions are present:

*Target object is reflective
*Reflective background
*Detecting dark objects on light backgrounds
*Sensors are aimed toward factory lights

The following features make the QS18 Foreground Suppression Sensors advantageous in challenging material handling and packaging applications:

*Adjustable range: short-range models offer 15 to 40 mm sensing range; long-range models offer up to 200 mm sensing range
*Reliable detection when a fixed background is present and the object color or shape varies
*Objects detected to the face of the sensor (no dead zone)
*Simple multi-turn screw adjustment of cutoff distance
*Crosstalk immunity algorithm allows two sensors to be used in close proximity
*Visible red emitter for simple sensor alignment

Banner Engineering's First FlexPower™ Solar Supply Designed for SureCross™ Wireless Sensing Applications

Minneapolis, MN—November 18, 2009mdash;Banner Engineering's FlexPower Solar Supply, BWA-SOLAR-001, delivers a complete solution specifically designed for powering SureCross Wireless Network devices—offering an integrated charge controller, rechargeable battery pack, AC wall charger and mounting hardware. The battery pack recharges in direct sunlight and continues to power the SureCross devices autonomously when sunlight is not available. The Solar Supply is an ideal solution for applications where wired power is not available or that require more power than a single-cell DX81 battery supply can provide.

Solar Supply Example 1:
Continuously Monitoring a 4-20 mA Transmitter
Often, in the oil and gas industry, the high value of the product requires that flow is measured continuously. Examples include custody transfer, remote drilling, and pipeline flow applications. A single FlexPower Solar Supply provides enough current to continuously power a 4-20 mA two-wire transmitter and FlexPower Node. This application requires an average of 80 minutes of sunlight per day and provides about 10 days of power without sunlight.

Solar Supply Example 2:
Wireless Network Range Extension
Extend the range of Banner's SureCross Wireless I/O network using solar-powered Data Radios. The FlexPower Solar Solution provides continuous power to a Data Radio and FlexPower Gateway. To complete the wireless network, battery or solar-powered Nodes collect I/O data up to 3 miles away. Visit www.bannerengineering.com for an overview of SureCross Wireless Network architecture.

Battery Backup Feature
The FlexPower Solar Supply can be used in addition to the DX81P6 Six-Pack Battery Supply as a backup power source. If the solar panel is damaged, the DX81P6 Battery Supply will provide backup power for a few weeks or longer depending on the load. For example, the battery backup can support a 2-wire sensor powered continuously with 15V at 20mA and a FlexPower Node transmitting once per second for up to 30 days.

Reduce Waste and Save Money with Solar
Banner's FlexPower Solar Supply is a stand-alone power option that enables wireless sensing where wired power is not available. The use of rechargeable batteries reduces the number of batteries necessary for long-term operation and ultimately minimizes electronic waste and saves money.

Engineering Student Develops Robot Using Banner Vision Sensor to Play Guitar Hero® with High Accuracy

Minneapolis, MN—October 14, 2009—Banner Engineering Corp. partnered with a Minnesota West Community and Technical College engineering student and robotics instructor to develop a robot designed to play the Guitar Hero® video game—responding to each note as it appears onscreen. Pete Nikrin, who graduated from Minnesota West in 2008 and now works as a manufacturing engineer at Meier Tool & Engineering, designed the robot to compete with a friend that Nikrin had introduced to the game and, after playing for two weeks, had surpassed Nikrin in his ability.

Bill Manor, robotics instructor at Minnesota West, suggested Nikrin incorporate a PresencePLUS® P4 OMNI vision sensor with a right-angle lens from Banner Engineering. Manor had such a vision system in his possession, as Minnesota West had purchased it at a discount through Banner as a start-up education kit.

"Students have used Banner vision sensors in many projects over the years—to inspect containers, for example, as they come down a conveyor," Manor said.

To develop his Guitar Hero robot, Nikrin used a mannequin—complete with Minnesota West sweatshirt, hat and painted fingernails—and installed the camera lens as the robot's left eye, which would be positioned toward the TV or computer screen. The robot, named Roxanne, identified the notes to be played by using an Edge vision tool, which detects, counts and locates the transition between bright and dark pixels in an image area.

"We set-up five Edge tools that ran horizontally across the screen, one for every fret, and positioned the tools to focus on the notes at the bottom of each," Nikrin said. "The Edge tools sent a constant signal as the five vertical fret lines progressed, and when a bright white dot appeared in the middle of a dark colored circle, the Edge tool allowed the sensor detect it."

Jeff Curtis, Senior Applications Engineer at Banner, worked with Nikrin and Manor to ensure the robot's processing time was fast enough to keep up with the video game. Once a note was identified, communicating this signal efficiently depended upon a heavy amount of programming, as well as Ethernet technology applied through a Modbus register. A PLC was programmed so that it constantly looked at the vision sensor's register. Once the Edge tool senses a note, the PLC notices the change in the register, and the logic in the PLC fires a solenoid that activates the robot's finger. Just as a human player would react, the robot's finger then presses down on the appropriate note on the guitar. This set-up resulted in 9 ms processing speed.

To ensure consistent, accurate operation, the team needed to ensure Roxanne could play within a range of lighting conditions—as she would be relocated from classrooms to gymnasiums for demonstrations—as well as confirm the robot was correctly oriented with the monitor displaying the video game. They solved this problem by using a Locate tool, an edge-based vision tool that finds the absolute or relative position of the target in an image by finding its first edge.

"We honed a Locate tool and gave it a fixed point—a piece of reflective tape on the PC monitor—to focus on," Curtis said. "This ensures the Edge tools are in the proper location to detect each note as it comes along and allows for any slight vibration in the application environment that could result in some deviation. If the robot starts to sag a bit, for example, it can still play."

Using this technique, Roxanne has, on Medium mode, hit 100 percent accuracy at times, and it averaged 98 percent accuracy during the remainder of Nikrin's tenure at Minnesota West. She could achieve up to 95 percent accuracy on Hard mode and 80 percent accuracy on Expert mode, due to the increased mechanical requirements of the robot's fingers required. Today, Roxanne still engages current and prospective Minnesota West engineering students, and Nikrin looks back on it with both a sense of accomplishment and a hefty dose of gratitude.

"Throughout the process, I was impressed with Banner's dedication to their products and customers," he added. "Bill and I both thought that they went above and beyond to help with a school project, which might seem trivial to some companies."

Banner Fiber Optic Sensor Counts Small Objects - Such as Pills, Seeds, and Miniature Components - Quickly and Accurately

Minneapolis, MN—September 10, 2009—Banner Engineering Corp. introduces the D10 Expert Small Object Counter, delivering high-performance small object counting to solve a variety of applications, including:

*Pharmaceutical pill, tablet and gel cap counting
*Agricultural seed counting
*Process verification
*Verifying product flow from the nozzle of a chute

The Small Object Counter consists of a specialized D10 Expert sensor paired with preconfigured PFVCA fiber optic arrays, creating a two-dimensional sensing field in which objects are readily detected upon breaking any point of the array. This arrangement makes alignment easier and object positioning control less critical than with traditional, single-point emitter and receiver fiber optic assemblies - assuring reliable, consistent small object counting with response times as fast as 150 microseconds.

Three major features - Dynamic Event Stretcher (DES), Automatic Compensation and Health Mode Alarm - make the Small Object Counter an ideal solution for challenging small object counting applications:

*DES prevents double-counting translucent gel caps and similar small objects, which may fool alternative sensing solutions. Both the front and end edge of the object breaking the fiber optic array could activate a traditional sensor, thus counting the object twice. With DES, the sensor will detect the front edge of the object and then stretch the duration of that detection event, giving object time to pass through the array being counted again.

*Automatic Compensation allows the sensor to adapt the switching threshold to its environment in real time. Small changes due to dust or contamination on the fiber optic array or small changes caused by ambient temperature shifts are filtered out by the microcontroller, providing consistent, repeatable results.

*Health Mode Alarm monitors the sensor's performance and alerts operators when preventative maintenance should be scheduled to ensure continuous, reliable operation.

The standard PFCVA fiber assemblies recommended for use with the D10 Small Object Counter will solve many counting applications. The fibers can also be used as test platforms to learn about application requirements. If the preconfigured PFVCA fiber optic arrays do not solve a specific application, a custom fiber optic assembly can be requested by contacting a Banner application engineer.

Features These features of the Small Object Counter make it particularly useful in the above applications:

*Easy-to-set selectable threshold with Automatic Compensation to compensate for dust or contamination on the fiber optic array and for ambient temperature changes
*Dynamic Event Stretcher (DES) to ensure one output per event - especially important for gel caps or objects with holes
*Single discrete output plus Health Mode output to indicate preventative maintenance is required
*16-bit microcontroller and 12-bit Analog-to-Digital converter for high-performance, low-contrast sensing
*Easy-to-read, user configurable, 4-digit display for Signal Level, Percentage Blocked or Health Mode readout, plus indicators for a continuous readout of operating status
*Sleek, ultra-slim 10 mm housing that mounts to a standard 35 mm DIN rail
*Three-mode power and speed selection to optimize detection reliability
*Visible red (680 nm) sensing beam

Banner EZ-SCREEN LP Safety Light Screen Delivers Low-Profile Design and Continuous Detection Across Entire Screen Length

Minneapolis, MN—August 6, 2009—Banner Engineering Corp. has expanded its EZ-SCREEN family of safety light screens to include low-profile models, which pair a space-saving footprint - ideal for safeguarding of smaller machine - with reliable performance suited even for large power presses. The first and last beams of the new EZ-SCREEN Low Profile (LP) are positioned at the ends of the light screen, delivering continuous detection along the entire light screen length and eliminating the dead zones found on traditional safety light curtains.

"In many safeguarding applications, space can be limited," said Mike Carlson, Technical Manager for Banner's Safety Products. "In these cases, the safety light screen might need to be positioned within the frame of the machine. With traditional safety light curtains, this would result in a gap, or dead zone, in the opening of the machine that could lead to a hazardous situation." Carlson added, "The EZ-SCREEN LP solves this problem with a compact 28 x 26 mm housing and end-to-end sensing, while maximizing ease of installation and flexibility."

The EZ-SCREEN LP offers exceptional versatility with 14 or 25 mm resolution models, defined areas from 270 to 1810 mm and detection ranges up to 7 m with excellent excess gain to solve a variety of application needs. The interconnection of cascade sensors has also been optimized with no big cable loops, allowing up to four sensor pairs and an Emergency Stop or interlocking guard switches to be connected at the end sensor. Also, there are models with nickel-plated housing for ESD-safe applications, clear anodized aluminum housing or "safety" yellow powder-coat housing.

The mounting scheme includes brackets for end or side mounting with no dead zone, both styles included with each sensor. Additional mounting options include a universal adapter bracket for mounting to slotted framing, a solution for mounting the sensor inside tubular framing such as P1000 Unistrut, and fixed or pivoting angle brackets to make installation of cascade sensors quick and easy.

The EZ-SCREEN LP offers the high performance and convenient features expected of EZ-SCREEN safety light screens, including simple alignment and setup, flexible wiring to allow emitters and receivers to be used interchangeably, easily configured reduced resolution and fixed blanking, and cascading. Blocked beams are identified using zone indicators, and a 7-segment display shows diagnostic information and number of blocked beams.

Applications The EZ-SCREEN LP delivers reliable safeguarding in a wide range of applications, including:

*Small assembly equipment
*Pick-and-place machines
*Power and molding presses
*Palletizers and packaging machinery
*Roll formers
*Automated production equipment
*Lean and robotic work cells

These features of the EZ-SCREEN LP make it particularly useful in the above applications:

Banner WORLD-BEAM QS30 Clear Object Sensors Provide Robust, Easy-to-Use Clear Object Detection

Minneapolis, MN - April 29, 2009 - Banner Engineering Corp. introduces the WORLD-BEAM® QS30 Clear Object Sensor, providing reliable clear object detection to solve challenging applications. The Clear Object Sensor utilizes an advanced optical design to allow the sensor to see translucent materials, ensuring dependable detection of clear targets including PET bottles and glass containers. Additionally, the optical design prevents the sensor from being tricked by specular reflections, allowing the sensor to detect optically engineered surfaces such as mirrors, LCD glass with polarizing films, and semiconductor wafers.

"Detecting clear objects is a difficult sensing challenge in many real world situations," said Dennis Smith, Technical Marketing Engineer at Banner. "The optical design of the Clear Object Sensor controls how the emitted light strikes the reflector, and it prevents false light signals from reaching the photodetector. The stable and controlled optical path allows the sensor's microcontroller to detect small changes in the light level, so even clear objects that alter the light level only slightly will activate the sensor. It is a very sensitive and highly reliable clear object detector."

The Clear Object Sensor is easily configurable using either the push button on the sensor or via a remote input line. The user can select from one of three switching thresholds - light, medium or dark, depending on the target's transparency level - to optimize detection and maximize sensing stability. The sensor also features an automatic compensation algorithm, which adapts the switching threshold to the sensor's environment in real time. Small changes due to dust or contamination on the sensor and reflector or small changes caused by ambient temperature shifts are filtered out by the microcontroller. These features ensure long and trouble-free sensor operation.

DX99, A Battery-Powered, Intrinsically Safe Wireless Transceiver

Minneapolis, MN - November 4, 2008 - Banner Engineering announced at the 2008 ISA show an entirely new way to collect analog, digital and temperature information in hazardous areas. The system is a state-of-the-art combination of wireless communication, battery technology and intrinsically safe electronics.

Hazardous areas pose unique sensing challenges. There are two main methods used today when collecting signals within a hazardous area: explosion-proof and intrinsically safe. Traditional explosion-proof methods work well and have been used reliably for decades, but they are expensive and the installation is time consuming. In the last 20 years, intrinsically safe barriers have reduced some of the cost and complexity. But, both methods still add a significant level of complexity and expense when compared to similar efforts in non-hazardous areas. Now, Banner has taken the next major step to make sensing within the hazardous area as easy as possible. This new method moves the intrinsically safe power supply from the control room to the wireless transceiver. This is the DX99.

The DX99 Battery-Powered Node is a revolutionary combination of 3 key state-of-the-art technologies combined in a single housing:

1) Battery-based power supply
2) Robust wireless technology for mission critical data
3) Intrinsically safe operation

Battery-based power supply: The DX99 Battery-Powered Node uses a liquid lithium battery to produce an intrinsically safe power source for the transceiver and an external third party sensor. When combined with low-power consumption sampling electronics, we have a standalone unit that can operate for up to 10 years on a single battery.

Robust wireless technology: The DX99 wireless technology is a highly tuned subsystem designed with industrial process applications in mind. It was designed to be reliable, secure and provide diagnostic information about the status of the wireless link. It has also been designed to transmit and receive up to 3 miles (150mw with 2dBi antenna) while consuming very little power. Every DX99 has a built-in site survey mode that allows the installer to quickly and easily determine the quality of the wireless link.

Intrinsically safe operation: This is the key that allows the DX99 to provide intrinsically safe power to the sensor directly within the hazardous area.

The DX99 is designed specifically for a certain class of applications. The following conditions are key indicators that you should consider the DX99:

Retrofit or upgrade situations. When trying to retrofit, repair or upgrade existing equipment, using wireless is a clear winner. The DX99 and sensor can simply be added to the existing system with no need to run new conduit or pull new wires. The addition of a DX99 Battery-Powered Node and a sensor can be completed in a matter of a few hours. Simply "peel and stick" where you need it.

Low power situations. Because the DX99 is battery powered, it works best in applications that have low sensor power requirements, including Thermocouple, Digital, and RTD, Loop powered sensors.

Typical process applications. The DX99 uses a sampling technology to reduce power consumption. The system can be configured to sample each second. However, if you sample every 16 seconds instead, the battery will last 16 times as long. The DX99 can also be configured to report on change of sensor-state or only in an alarm condition. This further conserves power and extends battery life. Proper sampling will provide 10-year battery life.

Mobile applications. The DX99 Battery-Powered Nodes are wireless and work ideally in mobile situations and can eliminate umbilical cords running back to the control panel.

Long distance applications. The DX99 can transmit up to 3 miles with a standard 2dbi antenna and range may be further extended using Banner's serial data radios with no compromise to the determinism established within the star topology of the network.

Power supply ability. The DX99 was designed to run not only the radio system but also power a certified Class I sensor.

Technical Points of the DX99:
*Available in rugged polycarbonate housing or metal housing; both options are intrinsically safe and rated IP67

*Rugged polycarbonate housing models certified for use in Class I, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, D; Class I, Zone 0, Group IIC; and Group IIC, Zone 0

*Metal housing models certified for use in Class I, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, D; Class II, Division 1, Groups E, F, G; Class III, Division 1; Class I, Zone 0, Group IIC; Group IIC, Zone 0; and Dust, Zone 20

*Rugged polycarbonate housing works with external battery power to support all RF communications and provides supply power for third party 4-20mA and Namur process sensors

*Metal housing includes internal battery power for all RF communications and also provides supply power for third party 4-20mA and Namur process sensors

*Rugged polycarbonate housing offers internal or external antenna options and the rugged metal housing offers external antenna only to support a range of mounting requirements

*Both housings allow simple DIP switch configuration

Factory-Calibrated Temperature & Relative Humidity Sensors Pair with SureCross Wireless Network

Minneapolis, MN—August 7, 2008—Banner Engineering Corp. introduces the SureCross Temperature and Humidity Sensor, robust instrumentation optimized for use with the company's SureCross Wireless Network.

The SureCross Temperature and Humidity Sensor is factory-calibrated to determine relative humidity to ±2% or ±3.5% (depending on model) and delivers temperature accuracy to ±0.3° C for simple critical data monitoring. Manufactured with a rugged metal housing and IP67 electronics, it provides maintenance-free operation in a wide variety of environmental monitoring applications.

Banner designed a proprietary serial sensor interface that enables the Temperature and Humidity Sensor and the wireless Node to operate on a FlexPower battery supply for up to 20 years. Fixed and remote-mount Node and sensor models enable a wide range of installation scenarios, including in-duct and freestanding applications. For remotely mounted sensors, cables in lengths up to 3 meters are available. A hydrophobic membrane filter for general applications and a sintered stainless steel filter for hostile drying areas are available to meet the requirements of the most demanding environments.

The sensor can be paired with a Node that includes an integral battery supply or an external power source including battery, solar or 10-30V dc. With an external power supply, two Temperature and Humidity sensors can be used with a single wireless Node. Each Node is equipped with an LCD and data is displayed in degrees C or F and relative humidity is in a percentage from 0-100%. The Node can be installed as a stand-alone device, or it can work in conjunction with a Gateway, the wireless network controller. The SureCross Wireless Network provides a robust, reliable wireless solution with bidirectional fully acknowledged data transmission. This network employs Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) and Time Division Multiple Access to ensure the most reliable data delivery possible. The Gateway supports multiple communication outputs and seamlessly integrates with existing wired control systems.

If radio frequency links are lost, all relevant outputs can be set to user-defined conditions until the links are reestablished. This deterministic wireless capability makes the products simple to install and more cost-effective than conduit, delivering a reliable, long-lasting solution.

"Monitoring the optimal temperature and humidity in controlled storage areas is crucial to ensuring optimum product quality—and if this environment is not sufficiently maintained, the stored products can quickly become compromised," said Chris Dales, Senior Application Engineer, Banner Wireless Division. "The Temperature and Humidity Sensor delivers highly accurate results that are simply transmitted using the communications-integrity-ensured SureCross Wireless Network, and users can select the power method that works best for their individual applications." Dales adds, "With this arrangement, if temperature or humidity exceed acceptable limits, a remotely located Gateway can issue an alarm to management personnel, minimizing the risk of product damage or loss."

Applications The SureCross Wireless Network equipped with the serial sensor interface and factory-calibrated Temperature and Humidity Sensors deliver dependable monitoring in a broad range of environments, including:

Banner WORLD-BEAM QS30 Water Sensors Solve Challenging Liquid Detection in Clear, Frosted or Colored Containers

Minneapolis, MN—July 23, 2008—Banner Engineering WORLD-BEAM QS30H2O Opposed Mode Water Sensors provide an innovative solution for efficiently detecting water-based liquids in clear, frosted, colored or even partially opaque bottles or containers. QS30 Water Sensors use a specially designed 1450 nm sensing beam, which is inherently absorbed by water, to make the previously challenging clear bottle/clear water combination detection a high-contrast application, enabling reliable detection. In addition, QS30 Water Sensors have high excess gain to "burn through" colored glass, labeled/decorated bottles and translucent milk jugs to detect the liquid contents.

QS30 Water Sensors consist of an emitter and a choice of either a low-power receiver, ideal for detecting water in clear bottles, or a high-power receiver, designed to effectively receive the emitted beam through partially opaque containers. In addition, the 13 mm diameter beam can be shaped using one of the three apertures that come standard with each emitter/receiver pair. The aperture reduces excess gain and narrows the sensing beam, facilitating accurate detection of water in vials, test tubes or other small vessels and containers. Pricing for a QS30 Water Sensor emitter/receiver pair begins at just $285.

"At a wavelength of 1450 nm, water absorbs about 1,000 times more energy than at visible wavelengths, allowing the QS30 Water Sensor to deliver reliable results in two ways," said Dennis Smith, technical marketing engineer at Banner. "When the bottle is clear, the energy absorption of the water creates high contrast between the water and the bottle. For example, a clear PET plastic bottle may attenuate about 5% of the light emitted, while the water attenuates about 95% of the light energy, allowing for simple discrimination between an empty or full bottle. The sensor also has the optical power to 'burn through' many partially opaque glass and plastic containers, but not through the liquid contents." Smith adds, "This light-blocking technique delivers accurate sensing at a cost-effective price."

Applications The unique design and robust ability of the QS30 Water Sensor make it an exceptional solution for demanding sensing applications, including:
*Fill level inspection in bottling applications
*Test tube liquid detection
*Food packaging inspection and verification

The QS30 Water Sensor is a member of Banner's WORLD-BEAM QS30 product line, an exceptional family of easy-to-use sensing products with a wide array of sensing modes and sizes, and delivered in a standard 30 mm housing. The sensor's rich feature set also includes the following:

Banner SI-HG63 Hinge Switches Provide Additional Safety Contacts & Adjustable Switching Point For Greater Application Flexibility In Hazardous Areas

Banner Engineering Corp. introduces SI-HG63 Series Hinge Safety Interlock Switches for safeguarding of hazards. SI-HG63 hinge switches are used in place of the standard hinges on swinging guards, gates or doors. They offer two normally closed safety contacts and one normally open auxiliary contact for greater application flexibility. When the SI-HG63 hinge switch is activated, these normally closed safety contacts are forced open by a nonresilient mechanical means (not reliant on springs), interrupting the electrical circuit and sending a stop signal to the machine control. SI-HG63 hinge switches are also repositionable, with a safety switching point that is easily adjustable throughout the hinge's full 0-270° range of motion.

Banner's SI-HG63 hinge switches are built to withstand harsh plant environments, with each safety switch body integrated into a highly robust PBT housing and integrated on to a stainless steel hinge. They are rated IEC IP67 and deliver superior performance and improved protection against defeat over actuator-style safety switches. Each hinge can support an axial and radial load of 1200 N (approximately 120 kg). In addition to in-line QD and "out-the-back" right-angle QD models, right-side and left-side hinges are available, which can be converted to operate from the opposite side when needed. List price for SI-HG63 hinge switches start at $159 each.

"Safeguarding a hazard with a guard, gate or door that is mounted on a hinge is one of the most common safety applications and also can be one of the most difficult to solve," said Mike Carlson, technical manager for Banner's safety products. "Typically, this type of application would use a keyed-actuator style of safety switch, but because the door or guard may sag or otherwise gets deformed, alignment problems with the switch and the actuator can arise. This usually results in damage to the switch and machine downtime," explains Carlson. "The SI-HG63 hinge switches do not have this problem and are a rugged, reliable solution that is very difficult to defeat."

Carlson adds, "When properly interfaced, they prevent cycle initiation or send a stop signal if the guard is opened, halting the hazardous motion. Depending on the number of switches on a guard and the means of interfacing, such as with a safety module, the SI-HG63 hinge switch can meet safety category 2, 3, or 4 [ISO 13849-1] and U.S. control reliability requirements."

Banner SureCross FlexPower Wireless Nodes Win Control Engineering’s 2007 Engineers' Choice Award

Minneapolis, MN—February 6, 2008—Banner Engineering Corp. announces that their SureCross FlexPower Wireless Nodes have won Control Engineering's 2007 Engineers' Choice Award under the "Wireless Solutions" subcategory. Banner's SureCross Wireless Network was introduced last summer to provide a robust monitoring and control solution purpose-built for industry. FlexPower Wireless Nodes can operate using 10 to 30V dc line power, solar panels, or a FlexPower battery module for applications where DC power is not readily available. A single FlexPower battery module can power both a SureCross Node and connected sensors for up to five years. Long-lasting operation, reliable communications and easy installation made the FlexPower Wireless Nodes a popular choice with Control Engineering readers. Amidst the numerous new technologies covered by Control Engineering each year, SureCross FlexPower Nodes stood out in the crowd.

"Each year, Control Engineering receives hundreds of new product announcements detailing the latest technologies available to automation professionals," said Marc Moschetto, Control Engineering's editorial director. "The Engineers' Choice Awards empower our readers to identify those solutions which will have the greatest positive impact on their business, and we congratulate Banner Engineering for this achievement."

The publication's annual competition began as the Editor's Choice Award, for which the editorial team determined the winning products among the many exceptional submissions received through the year. In 2007, Control Engineering left the decision-making up to their readers, who work with these products on a regular basis. Now dubbed the Engineers' Choice Award, the honor is granted to the product receiving the most votes in one of several categories - this year, selected from more than 150 product nominations divided into seven categories. Control Engineering received responses from over 870 individuals responsible for purchasing, implementing or operating the technologies in these respective industrial areas. The products chosen indicated the solutions determined to be the most noteworthy and to provide the greatest advantage in day-to-day production.

"We are thrilled to have received the Engineers' Choice Award for our new wireless network - developed with these very engineers in mind," said Darvin Kaelberer, Wireless Business Development Manager at Banner. "Our FlexPower Wireless Nodes combine secure communications, deterministic response capabilities and innovative power management to deliver a dependable solution for challenging applications never before possible."

FlexPower Wireless Nodes use efficient power management technology that enables the Node to briefly step up the switch power voltage to activate a sensor for a fraction of a second. After the input reads the sensing status, the switch power returns to its standby status, prolonging battery life. All SureCross devices are also conveniently sized and easily mounted for simple integration into existing manufacturing systems, all with the robust communications and rugged construction required for reliably monitoring and controlling rotating or remote equipment to solve the most challenging applications.
