Point-of-Use Interface for Robotic Assembly Cells

Challenge

Cell status, reload prompts, and operator input need to be integrated into the PLC logic controlling a robotic assembly cell. A traditional HMI requires building and maintaining a separate interface layer alongside that PLC logic, while building the interface from dedicated buttons, indicators, and displays increases installation complexity, crowds the station, and creates more maintenance points. 

Solution

An S100 Multi-Touch Display with IO-Link is mounted near the load panel in an ergonomic position, with its low-profile 100 mm housing preserving operator visibility into the cell. The same PLC logic that controls the robot and cell sequence updates the S100 through an IO-Link master. When assembly is active, the load panel remains locked, the S100 displays a scrolling “Assembly Active” message, and its 16 RGB LEDs turn red. When the cycle is complete, PLC updates the S100 with the prompt “Open Door.” When the operator selects the prompt, haptic feedback provides tactile confirmation, and the S100 signals the PLC to unlock the load panel. The S100 then displays “Swap Part” to guide the reload step—all without the overhead of a full HMI. I dont think we want this to be an OR thing. They would do both open door and swap parts. Touching Open door, could trigger the door to unlock
