Reliable Leading Edge Detection Under Conveyors in AOI Machines

Challenge

In surface mount technology (SMT) production lines, automated optical inspection (AOI) machines scan printed circuit boards (PCBs) at high speeds to detect defects such as missing components or soldering errors. The AOI’s camera assembly is mounted immediately above the conveyor, leaving no space for a sensor to reliably detect the PCB edge from overhead.

Solution

With its thin, 4-millimeter housing, a Q2F flat pack fixed-field sensor can be easily fitted just millimeters underneath the conveyor belt. Despite the confined space, the sensor can reliably detect the leading edge of the PCB and ensure it is properly positioned for inspection.
