Blind Spot Monitoring for Mining Vehicles
Challenge
Detecting obstacles in large blind spots around mining vehicles is especially difficult in the harsh conditions of mining operations. Most sensing technologies cannot remain reliable in the full range of environmental conditions that operators contend with on a daily basis. Dust, debris, heavy winds, rain, glaring sunlight, and other harsh environmental conditions can make detection and direct observation unreliable, forcing operators to rely on judgment in conditions with little margin for error.
Solution
The Q90R2 Radar Sensor features an adjustable sensing field that reliably detects obstacles in front of the vehicle, ensuring blind spots are covered while ignoring objects outside the defined detection zone. Housed in a compact, IP69K-rated enclosure with solid-state electronics, it withstands shock, vibration, and extreme environmental conditions commonly encountered in off-road and heavy equipment applications. The configurable detection range of 0.15 to 20 meters (0.5 to 65.6 feet) can be tailored to account for vehicle speed, stopping distance, and operator reaction time. The sensor is compatible with Banner’s programmable logic controllers and visual indicators, allowing for integrated signaling and system-level feedback. Quick configuration using Banner’s software tools ensures fast deployment and consistent performance across a fleet of vehicles.
