Smarter CNC Tool Selection
Challenge
In a machine shop, tool identification data (geometry, offsets, and usage history) were stored in three places: the presetter, a job setup sheet, and the machine control. Because these sources were not unified, the correct holder would sometimes get loaded under the wrong tool ID or with the wrong offsets. When holders moved between machines, reused tools would run on old offsets or past their life limit. The result was scrap and unplanned stops.
Solution
Embedding an RFID tag in each toolholder enables automatic identification, error-proofing, and usage tracking. When a toolholder is loaded, an HF RFID Read-Write Head at the tool-change position reads the tag and sends the tool ID to the machine control. The correct geometry and offsets are then loaded into the control automatically from the tag. As machining runs, the control tracks cycle counts and cutting time, writing updated usage to the tag during tool change. Automating offset input and life tracking reduces downtime, extends tool life, and improves machining accuracy.
